The Mindful Manager TM

This presentation shows you how you can maximize employee engagement, motivation, and retention by becoming more mindful.

… Mindful of the key moments of truth that either build—or destroy—employee engagement and motivation.

Many of the moments of truth between managers and employees that go wrong also go unnoticed by the manager.

Because all but the most outspoken employees are reluctant to confront their boss about thoughtless (or disrespectful) behavior, their boss continues to do things that damage morale and engagement, without realizing what they’re doing wrong.

Given that only 26% of employees report being highly engaged, according to Gallup’s research, it’s obviously important to know how to handle these moments of truth in ways that increase—rather than decrease—employee engagement and morale.

In this program, presented at an international conference, David Lee explores how you can do that. This presentation is both for excellent managers who want to refine their skills and for managers who need to understand the impact they have on others.

Topics Covered:

  1. Why we become mindless in the workplace and the price we, our employees, and our employer pays for this.
  2. The principle world class brand managers understand, and that you need to understand, too, if you want to maximize employee engagement and motivation… and dramatically reduce employee negativity.
  3. What you need to never, ever forget about how your power affects your employees.
  4. Why it’s not good enough just to do good things for your people (it has something to do with how the brain is hard-wired).
  5. Key Manager/Employee moments of truth that can build—or destroy—employee engagement.
  6. What happens when employees don’t feel safe enough to speak honestly about what’s bothering them (it isn’t pretty).
  7. How to increase the odds that employees will speak honestly and openly about what’s bothering them.
  8. Companies where employees feel this way about management have 300% greater profitability. Learn what it is.
  9. What to do if you are a new manager, to set the stage for honest, open, mature dialogue between you and your new team.
  10. What does it mean to be “honorable” with your power?
  11. How to manage this all important moment of truth: You asked for employee input and you think the idea you jut got would never work, or is just plain ridiculous. How do you respond honestly, yet also so the person doesn’t feel dismissed or patronized? Getting this right is critical as it’s one of the most important employee engagement affecting moments of truth there are.

How to Create a Magnetic Employer Brand TM

Creating an Employer Brand that acts like a talent magnet isn't about creating the ultimate sales pitch about what a great company you are. It isn't about having spiffy collateral material that wins design awards. Creating a Magnetic Employer Brand T comes from FIRST starting to create a work experience that turns your employees into an unstoppable volunteer PR firm that can't help but tell others about what a great employer you are. Then and only then do you have something to tell the world. Companies who work on their external message without working on the work experience their Employer Brand promises, end up driving away the very people they spent tremendous sums of money to get though the door. In this presentation, David Lee identifies the common mistakes companies make when they decide to create an employer brand, and then walks the listener through a process for creating a work experience that leads to a magnetic story that is worth bragging about to the labor market.

The Hard Truth About Soft Skills

There's nothing soft about "soft skills" when it comes to the bottom line. Research shows that soft skills are in fact the software needed to run a profitable business. Communicating this effectively to management is one of the most important jobs of HR and an area you can provide tremendous value if you do it right. In this CD, recorded at an HR conference, you will learn what the research has to say about how "soft skills" and "people practices" translate into bottom line profitability (Hint: the impact is staggering.) If you want to make a more compelling case for instituting progressive practices and improving morale, this presentation will help you accomplish this.

Whatever Life Brings: Finding Serenity and Vitality Through Resilience

This presentation, recorded in 2001 at a fundraiser for a crisis center after the events of September 11th, explores how to develop greater resilience. Resilience is our ability to handle life’s challenges without becoming stressed, as well as our ability to bounce back from difficulties.

With increased resilience, you’re able to deal with the daily demands and pressures of today’s complex world with greater serenity. Because of your increased capacity to deal with challenges without becoming stressed, greater resilience also means more energy and vitality. Energy and vitality you can bring to both your work and personal life.

Resilience also plays a major role in your ability to respond to major life events. With heightened resiliency, you’re able to face major life changes, challenges, and uncertainties with serenity, optimism, and vitality.

Perhaps the most important reason to develop resilience, though, is how it affects your life’s trajectory.

When we trust our ability to handle “whatever life brings”, we’re willing to take risks and make life choices based on “that still small voice” inside, rather than avoid being true to ourselves out of fear. Thus, resilience helps us live a life that is uniquely ours to live, rather than living a “settled for” life and going to our graves with “our song unsung.”

In this presentation, David Lee blends resilience research, poetry, and teaching stories that will both uplift you and give you practical strategies for building resilience.

Stress Less To Unleash Your Best

Rather than settle for “stress management”, learn how to stop stress in its tracks. The better you are at stopping stress in the first place, the happier and healthier you will be. Also, people who know how to handle the demands and pressures of today’s work world without getting stressed, are more effective and happy at work.

This program, based on David Lee’s 25 years in the stress management and resilience field, will provide you with practical strategies for dealing with stress, presented to you in a fun, light hearted way.

This presentation is far different from traditional “stress management” programs focusing on relaxation techniques.  It synthesizes current research and cutting edge techniques with time tested principles, the result being an approach designed for today’s modern world. In this program, you will learn how to:

  • Maintain peak performance despite the demands, pressures, and difficult people each work day brings.
  • Deal with difficult situations and people without losing your cool.
  • Create a “life ecosystem” that nourishes and revitalizes you.
  • Experience greater energy, passion, and vitality.
  • Recognize – and eliminate – ways you create stress in your life.
  • Respond to change and uncertainty with greater flexibility, adaptability, and optimism.

This presentation was recorded in 2005 and is a nice compliment to the “Whatever Life Brings” CD which was recorded in 2001. While there is some overlap in material, each contains information that the other doesn’t.

After attending this program, this is what Naomi Judd had to say:

“Having seen a lot of speakers, I can’t tell you just how impressed I was by David. I even waited in line to talk with him... I learned a great deal and laughed my butt off in the process… When we have someone who is so genuine and so well prepared, we owe it to each other to spread the word…. I take it very seriously when I recommend someone else’s work and… he’s great!”

"Whenever I attend a seminar, if I leave with 2 or 3 solid items to implement back at our office, I feel the day has been worthwhile.  I left David Lee's half-day course with more than 20 solid, common-sense, no-cost items that I am eager to implement.  And the best part is that it is clear that implementing them will have a measurable impact for our firm!  This half- day course was an excellent use of time."

Eric S. Wood, President, EnviroSense, Inc., New Hampshire

“David has an uncanny ability to not only capture the attention of his audience, but also maintain a consistent level of interest in his students… Although I recognized and easily understood most of the concepts that David presented in his class, his perspective (which I value immensely due to his knowledge and intellect) and innovative style of teaching sparked my curiosity and interest, and more importantly, triggered my brain to ask more questions, deeper questions… David also has that rare ability to teach effectively to individuals that are at different levels of comprehension and understanding, and exhibit different styles of learning. … Lastly, I would like to add a very important detail regarding David’s style of teaching and his personality.  His wit and great sense of humor were very appreciated in the class by all.  He has what I like to call ‘intelligent’ humor which is a gift.”

“David Lee is as funny as he is resourceful. His genius is in tying personal stories into resiliency training, all the while transforming potentially painful subject matter into light- hearted wonderment through laughter.  One cannot help but know, at a subconscious level, that he's using humor to talk about the unspeakable - and the gift becomes a discovery of what is true, what is right, and what is attainable for us all."
